Brazil (officially the Federative Republic of Brazil) is a federative republic formed by the union of 26 federal states and the Federal District. The country has 5,564 municipalities, 183,987,291 inhabitants and an area of 8,514,876.599 square km, equivalent to 47% of South American territory. Compared with other countries of the world, has the fifth largest contingent of the population and the fifth largest area.
As the ninth largest economy in the planet and the largest Latin American economy, Brazil has today strong international influence, whether regional or global in scope. The country has between 15 and 20% of the world's biodiversity, and example of this wealth the Amazon jungle, with 3.6 million square kilometers.
It makes the northern border with Venezuela, with Guyana, Suriname and with the overseas department of French Guiana, to the south with Uruguay, the southwest with Argentina and Paraguay, with Bolivia to the west and with Peru and Finally, the northwest with Colombia. The only South American countries do not have a common border with Brazil are Chile and Ecuador. The country is bathed by the Atlantic Ocean on along its northern coast, northeast, southeast and south.
Besides the continental territory, Brazil also has some large groups of islands in the Atlantic Ocean, such as: Penedos of São Pedro and São Paulo, Fernando de Noronha (special territory of the state of Pernambuco) and Trinidad and Martin Vaz in the Espírito Santo. There is also a complex of small islands and coral called Atol das Rocas (which belongs to the state of Rio Grande do Norte).
Despite being the fifth most populous country in the world, Brazil has one of the lowest population densities. Most of the population is concentrated along the coastline, while the interior of the country today is marked by huge demographic empty.
